OUR FACILITIES - BRYN
PICA MATERIALS RECYCLING FACILITY (MRF) |
| In October 2005 Amgen Cymru opened its new materials
recycling facility (MRF) at Bryn Pica. The MRF sorts and classifies
recycling collected from Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council
and has the capacity to process up to 30,000 tonnes per annum. |
| Materials included in the kerbside collection are:
Paper
Cardboard
Plastic
Glass
Cans
Green garden waste
|
 |
| The recovery rate for these materials currently averages
97%, i.e. for every 100 tonnes of material that is taken into the
facility 97 tonnes of material is sorted and used for recycling into
new products. |
| When materials are delivered into the MRF they are normally
in polythene bags, as collected from outside the residents' homes.
These bags are manually split and the contents are spread out onto
a conveyor belt.
Green garden waste is taken directly to the composting
sheds.
This process then continues by means of manual separation of recyclate
streams deposited individually in bins. When the bins are full the
recyclate streams are then bailed on site for onward transmission
to various recycling companies. |
 |
| Any material that has no recycling value (3% of the total input),
which is mostly food wastes that cannot be recycled, pass into a container
which is deposited in our landfill site. |
 |
SORT SHED |
| The sort shed is a separate building to the MRF and is located
next door. It is the last opportunity to divert materials from landfill.
Waste vehicles are directed into the shed if their Duty of Care
(waste transfer) note indicates that they have materials on board
that can be recycled. Materials covered by this operation are:
Scrap metal
Cardboard
Wood
Green garden waste
Inert material (rocks and other aggregates)
Dense plastics
These materials are separated by our operatives and sent onwards
for recycling as necessary.
