September 2007 - Amgen Cymru Awarded Green Dragon Level 4

Amgen Cymru is proud to announce that it has been awarded Green Dragon Level 4.

Green Dragon is an Environmental Standard unique to Wales in which large and small companies, in any industry or business sector can gain recognition for their effective environmental management.

When Amgen Cymru were recently independently audited and awarded the standard they were commended by the assessor on their environmental systems.

Amgen Cymru’s environmental performance was measured against criteria including: energy usage, use of natural resources, training systems and its impact on the local environment to gain the accreditation.

Various measures have been introduced at the Bryn Pica site to reduce the carbon footprint of the company and improved sustainability.  They include:

The removal of all waste bins from the offices.  These have been replaced with recycling banks with the only residual waste bin being located in the kitchen area.

A reduction in the amount of paper used by double sited printing and photocopying and the use of scrap paper for note taking.

A commitment to purchase goods made from recycled materials wherever possible.

A reduction in water usage by improved toilet flushing systems.

There are 5 steps within the standard incorporating the key elements of Planning, Taking Action, Checking Progress and Reviewing Achievements to realise continual environmental improvement.

The Green Dragon Standard Level Four involves formalising environmental management into a structured system.

There are seven elements to Green Dragon Level 4. They begin to formalise the steps taken in previous levels to build a more comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS).

The elements of Level Four include:

Training: ensuring formal environmental training procedures are developed for staff training within the company

Environmental Manual: a brief guidance document is produced to provide an overview of the elements within the EMS

System Procedures: develop procedures to control environmental impacts and key elements of the EMS

Control of Documents: documents within the EMS are to be controlled to prevent mistakes.

Problem Identification, Correction & Prevention: any problems that may arise within the EMS should be identified and corrected and preventive action taken.

Carbon Data Collection: all records of fuel and electricity are kept to calculate the carbon dioxide emissions within the company

Environmental Statement: publish a brief statement of our environmental activities and performance

Amgen Cymru has received a certificate and the Green Dragon Plaque. Company details, Environmental Policy, Objectives & Targets, Carbon Dioxide released and the Environmental Statement will be registered on the Green Dragon website.
