About each nominated businessAmgen Cymru– Winners Amgen Cymru’s Activity Centre at Bryn Pica Recycling Centre has proved to be a valuable facility for educating young people on how and why they should reduce household waste – and therefore reduce the amount of refuse going to landfill. The Centre has short films to watch, a mini materials facility and, if you are lucky, a ‘recycling centre safari’, where you can see exactly what people of Rhondda Cynon Taf throw away and how Amgen Cymru try to deal with it. Amgen Cymru is doing its best to engage young people and make our environment a better one, now and for the future.
Dragonsavers Credit Union - Highly Commended The Tonyrefail branches of Dragonsavers Credit Union are doing as much as they can to minimise their environmental impact. They have reduced their paper consumption by 50% in the last year – mainly by using ‘the other side’ of (non-confidential) paper, have reduced electricity consumption by installing an Urn instead of boiling kettles as well as installing a light motion sensor that only comes on when somebody is in the room, and have a boiler that can be programmed so that the heating is on only when staff are in the office. Their members have debit cards to access/transfer their money by telephone, therefore reducing their carbon footprint. Dragonsavers Credit Union realise they must optimise operations to minimise their environmental impact while improve social outcomes, but maximising their performance to make a positive environmental impact.
DS Smith Rhondda - Highly Commended DS Smith have looked at their business and have started to save money by doing the right thing for the environment, gaining an ISO 14001 accreditation in environmental standards. The Rhondda site processes corrugated cardboard into various forms of packaging and have focused their efforts on reducing waste to landfill and increasing the recycling on site. Waste wood is collected and recycled for making fireboard sheets for the furniture industry. The wire from their stitching process is collected and recycled by Tradebe. They operate a cleaning cloth recycling programme where cloths are collected, washed and then returned, and wooden pallets are re-used as much as possible, or if broken collected by their pallet supplier to reduce fuel consumption. In the office they recycle all their paper across the plant they are now recycling far more than ever before and producing the least landfill waste in their industry.
